Week 42: Jamie T- Ghosts (100 Days of Morning)

Jamie T’s sixth studio album, “Ghosts (100 Days of Morning)”, explores nostalgia, ageing, and making peace with the past. The record is a game of two halves. The first is all about energy and excitement, while the second is more reflective and slower. The first half is the enjoyable part, while the second half, although lyrically sound, saw my attention drift.

Here is a short and sweet track-by-track review:

3310: The title may reference a popular early-2000s Nokia phone, but it’s not mentioned inside; instead, we get Jamie’s unique vocals over pure energy.

Cocktail: Damon Albarn features over a catchy beat and fun arrangement.

Waist 36 Leg 32: Energetic, punchy guitars, strong rhythm.

All I Wanna See Is Now: The first track with an intro before it really begins.

The Won: Strong and energetic.

Chelsea Girls: Electronic dance feel. Something different.

Ghosts: The Jam cover feels more thoughtful.

Crimson & Clover: Reflective and slow. Strong lyricism.

Crucible: Reflective. Slow. Thought-provoking lyricism.

Caught Cheating: Reflective. Extremely personal.

Tallahassee: Thought-provoking.

Fade Out:

Plenty to like about the album, especially Jamie’s songwriting; his stories grab your attention, and he isn’t shy about trying something new. However, the tracklisting doesn’t help. The first half is energetic and gets right into the action, but the second half is quieter, more reflective, and loses momentum.

The record is a mixed bag. The first six tracks are where my interest was, but the second six began far too soon to find the right balance. The tempo drops all too suddenly. The album had the potential to be great; now, don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t necessarily a bad thing that the next six were slower, because the lyricism was on point, but I felt the tempo needed to be brought down gradually.
