Week 16: Dermot Kennedy- The Weight of the Woods

“The Weight of the Woods” is the third studio album by Dermot Kennedy, which focuses on nature imagery and true emotion and is extremely personal, foretelling what he’s observed and his own life. The record is an emotional journey that is thoughtful, delicate, occasionally heavy, yet always sprinkled with joy.

Now, let’s take a look at how the sound and atmosphere stack up:

Although the sound is simple, you are drawn in. Gabe Simon’s delicate production, which mainly focuses on acoustic instruments, gives the songs space to breathe rather than opting for big effects. The music follows the album’s title. It gives off a calm woodland vibe. That soundscape gives the impression that the tracks were recorded al fresco rather than in a studio. The opening track is a reprise of the title track, which is a strange way to start a record. Reprises are usually featured towards the end of an album.


What about Dermot’s vocals?

His voice is ,of course, the heart of the record. We hear that urgency and raw emotion, which sometimes sounds like his voice is breaking under the sheer force of his delivery. He switched up when necessary, from quiet, personal moments to intense, powerful ones, regardless of the lyric’s importance.

What are the subjects and lyricism on display?

Well, the record is predominantly about Irish landscapes, grief, reflection, and emotional endurance. Love is utilised as both refuge and weight. He addresses personal growth and identity. Naturally, songs like ‘Funeral’ and ‘Blue Eyes’ focus on dealing with loss and learning to heal, whereas other tracks address more thoughtful and quieter moments.

What are the standout tracks?

Honest: The most emotional song on the entire album. Here, Dermot adopts an urgent yet vulnerable tone as if he is sharing a confession.

Refuge: This is like a personal yet tender lullaby. It expresses that even in the midst of chaos, love is a safe place.

Funeral: A track that I mentioned earlier is heavy on emotion. The production synchronises with the subject of confronting grief.

Endless: Another track you may have heard before the album’s release( the other being the aforementioned) is extremely haunting, exploring everlasting pain and unresolved feelings.

Sycamore: This track explores real places in Kennedy’s life. The closest track tied to his identity and home.

The Only Time I Prayed: A song of familiarity to Kennedy’s earlier work, displaying spiritual reflection and personal storytelling. The penultimate track is bittersweet, reflective, yet quietly devastating.

The Weight of the Woods: The opener was the title track reprise, and the closer is the title track in its entirety, highlighting the record’s key theme of emotional burden and growth.

Strengths:

Strong thematic connections interwining nature and emotion.
Vocals are powerful and vulnerable.
Consistent and immersive atmosphere.
Personal and thought-provoking lyricism based on real experiences.

Weaknesses:

The tempo lacks variation.
Some tracks sound the same.

Coda:

We won’t find many chart-friendly tracks on “The Weight of the Woods”. To be honest, Dermo has never been about that. He likes to draw the listener in with sobering lyricism over melancholic sounds, and once again, he focuses on raw emotion. This album is more about the journey than picking out anthemic songs. It may be deeply human, but there are glimpses of hope. It may well be yet another very sobering record from Kennedy, but there is beauty in melancholy.

Week 31: Cian Ducrot- Victory

I had no idea who Cian Ducrot was, but when I heard him, I thought he was a cross between Dermot Kennedy, Lewis Capaldi, and Danny O’Donoaghue. The Cork native has been around since 2018, and this is his debut album, which saw the teaser ‘All for You’ reach 5 million streams to date and ‘I’ll be Waiting’ that top inside the top 20 of the singles chart over here.

The opener is none other than the title track, which is thought-provoking, to say the least. It also leads you to the concept of the record being about strong and damaged relationships and how, in both kinds, we mature and learn from them. His vocals, not only on this but throughout, with that unmistakable Cork lilt, have a soaring ache.

This album has been eagerly awaited, and you can tell he has invested a lot of time in the studio because it has taken him since his inception to release his debut. He had even promoted this before it was even released by supporting Ed Sheeran on tour, where he garnered more fans, and doing intimate gigs at the tail-end of June. As mentioned in the previous paragraph, the record takes you on a journey of how we can grow from situations, no matter how bad or good, and we can adapt to them accordingly.

Look at the lyrics to ‘I’ll be Waiting’:

If you ever wanna fall in love, if you ever wanna bet on us, if you ever wanna be my one, I’ll be waiting.

From these lyrics, you can see that Cian is talking personal where someone is hesitant about committing to a relationship with him, and even though he is doing his thing, he is open to a relationship if that specific individual is willing to commit.

‘Heaven’ is a highly emotional track, where he talks about his solid relationship with his brother. This piano ballad is accompanied by loving lyrics about how they will carry each other through thick and thin.

’Thank God You Stayed’ is another exquisite track exploring all the qualities and flaws of lovers in a relationship. There are also other highlights, which are deeply personal about his father and mother.

This album was a pleasure to listen to; I can only see him going from strength to strength. It’s going to be hard to improve on such an outstanding debut.

Week 47: Dermot Kennedy- Sonder

I was incredibly pleased when I saw Derm get to number one. I have known him for a while now. He first followed me on twitter back in 2018 (I think.), and I have been pursuing the Dubliner’s career since. I was also proud to see him on the autumn edition of Later…with Jools Holland last month, where he performed ‘Dreamer’.

You’re probably looking at the title and wondering, “What the fuck is ‘sonder’?” I found while researching that it means “the realisation that each random passerby is living a life as vivid and complex as your own, ” which fits in with how Derm writes. He doesn’t appear to write from personal experience per sé but instead tells a fable that reflects the lives of his listeners, which is quite evident in most of his songs. Also, a lot of rappers can write from that perspective (I believe it is the third person perspective, but right now, I am writing while listening to Groove Armada, so even though I can still write this review, I am having brain fog on the exact term I am looking for.) Another songwriter who has a knack for writing like that is Kelly Jones of Stereophonics.

The album contains love, loss and optimism. Another thing I like about Derm is his vocal delivery. You believe what he is saying when he sings with an aching heart. I also like the way he can sing while his voice breaks. What do I mean by that “voice breaks”? Well, for instance, on ‘Dreamer’, which is quite melancholic, you can hear the tears as he talks about the subject. He isn’t crying, but the way he delivers it is like the individual breaking down and crying.

Although the record may be titled “Sonder”, there is no title track. The nearest to it would be ‘Something to Someone’, which, as you can tell, is about breaking up in a relationship. I suggest going to his YouTube and listening to the album through that route because videos accompany the songs, and you get a true sense of what the songs are about. There are some compelling videos on there.

Like most artists who have had a record out last year or so, this was done while in quarantine, and Derm perfects how everyone was feeling on ‘Better Days’. The leading single talks of having optimism that we will get out of this mess and look ahead to better days.

The album is what you expect it to be—polished production-wise and vocally. Derm is a superstar back home in Mother Ireland and spent the last year doing outdoor events. He will play London’s O2 Arena for the “Sonder” tour next spring. He is about to become a star all over Europe and the world. Oh, I almost forgot, the opener ‘Any love’ has a touch of Bon Iver to it, which is an exciting start, and as I like Bon Iver, I liked what Derm did.
