Week 5: James Arthur- Bitter Sweet Love

I have never been a fan of this 2012 X Factor winner, nor do I believe he should be No.1 after a bullshit technicality. The Reytons outsold him, but James got it due to a complaint from some jobsworth in the industry. I believe this decision has marred this week’s chart. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if corruption was involved. Unlike a fair few of the former winners and contestants of the ITV talent show, James has grafted away while they have disappeared into obscurity. He also has a mad hairstyle—a cross between Mike Flowers and Tim Burgess without the bleach blonde. 

“Bitter Sweet Love” is the fifth album released by James. Although he has distinctly husky and soulful vocals, how long has he got before this no longer carries him? Yes, it is different from the likes of Ed Sheeran and Harry Styles, and I am going to throw an obscure one from 2011, Josh Kumra, but they are versatile. When reading about this record or purely people’s opinions, I heard it was full-on rock. Really? Where? I heard some rock but also plenty of piano ballads and acoustic moments. The album is quite reflective. ‘Free Falling’, ‘Just Us’, and ‘Is It Alright?’ have some hard-hitting lyrics, but that’s about it. I tend to like piano ballads and acoustic songs, but they made this record disjointed, and you drift away because they are too frequent on what is allegedly a “rock album”.

The opener is the title track, which unfortunately turns out to be a false dawn. As I said, the record needs to maintain your interest. The title track, however, captures your attention with its bombastic sound. There are a few more moments like that on the album. ‘Blindside’ draws inspiration from the 1980s, and the highlight must be ‘Comeback Kid’. Now that is full-on rock. His attempts at being political on ‘New Generation’ fall flat. It had a nice rock feel, though.

Listen at your discretion, but I’m afraid there are too many moments when your concentration drifts away. The Reytons have been robbed, and this record didn’t deserve to “win”.

Week 23: Niall Horan- the Show

The most talented individual from One Direction, but Niall Horan is somewhat in the shade regarding former band members who have excelled. Harry Styles has had the most success as a solo artist, with Niall being the second. They always say the nice guys get overlooked, and that’s the case with Niall. He is more reserved than Harry, and even though he has got another No. 1 album under his belt, it passes without much fanfare. When Niall releases music, it flies under the radar of the media. They are more interested in the extroverted Harry Styles. Seeming to follow his every move.

Although he may not sell out stadiums, Niall is doing enough to carve out a solo career. Rather than attempt to be more rock n roll, Niall has elected to be more pop with synthesisers on this record, which, surprisingly, coming from a love of Indie, is more suited to his songwriting style.

The only time you will hear a guitar in full flow on the album is ‘You Could Start a Cult’, a song about looking through a relationship with rose-tinted glasses. It also features a harmonica solo. I don’t know if Niall is a fan of Johnny Marr (He probably is.), but it reminded me somewhat of the guitar legend. In all honesty, I wasn’t a fan of the track. I don’t know. There appears to be a sense of mediocrity to it. Save for the harmonica solo. On ‘Must be Love’, Niall discusses his insecurities about falling in love but confesses that you cannot hold back love if it feels like it, no matter how hard you try to resist

He cannot let that thought go even on the cheerful ‘Heaven’ where he is expressing feelings of being in love but also fears that everything will go pear-shaped over bouncing piano keys with sultry vocals. There is a reverb effect on ‘If You Leave’, and I was disappointed with ‘Save My Life’ because it sounds like something the 1975 would churn out.

I don’t know if I liked the record because it captures your imagination and then doesn’t. Sometimes it’s the lyrics, and sometimes it’s the instrumentation. I call the album safe and tidy. Niall is more comfortable writing these types of songs. I cannot wait to hear him write Indie to see if he can pull it off.

Week 46: Louis Tomlinson- Faith in the Future

Wahey! a better number one than last week’s pile of shite. Louis Tomlinson is known for appearing on some talent show on ITV, where One Direction was born. Louis was with the band until they “split”  in the last decade. Albeit, he was on the books of Doncaster Rovers for a while, despite it being a member of the boy band. That ended after the Stiliyan Petrov charity match in 2013 at Celtic Park when Louis, in the hoops, was brutally tackled by Gabriel Agbonlahor (sporting the gold away kit.) and vomited by the by-line and came off. He wasn’t on for that long before that happened. It seemed to have given those inside Paradise a chuckle.

Anyway, the weirdest thing about Louis doing a solo project since the “split” is no one saw it coming because he never gave you a clue that he would do anything in that manner. He was still trying to figure out what he planned to do. There was no mention of starting/joining another band, either. I reckon it was pure peer pressure because within a year of One Direction “splitting”, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan, and Harry Styles had albums out. He released his debut “Walls” in 2020, which was met with praise by the Directioners (super fans.), and for the rest of us? Well, we weren’t impressed. It was neither here nor there. It was just a standard record.

What people might only be aware of if you happen to be a Directioner is that Louis was the most prolific songwriter in the band. Hard to believe when you had the likes of Harry and Niall. He is also responsible for the change in direction the band had in the latter years. He brought more of a rock element, which was fit for the stadiums they were playing.

Although I am left unimpressed with his vocals on “Faith in the Future”, I was impressed with the overall production. For example, ‘the Greatest’ combines the Script and Imagine Dragons, and ‘Written All Over Your Face’ is modern indie. The album teaser ‘Bigger than Me’ has an acoustic accompanying an electric guitar, with a steady drum beat in the verses that turns into a marching beat during the bridge before the song rises into an explosive chorus. ‘Lucky Again’ is another modern indie track. What do I mean by this? Listen to Indie radio on YouTube, and you will see that it would fit perfectly on those live broadcasts. ‘Face the Music’ has a steady rhythm guitar that has a frantic riff alongside it, and ‘Saturdays’ is a mid-tempo song about the brutal reality of splitting up with someone (Maybe in Louis’ case, it is veiled. Meaning it could be about One Direction?).

Okay, the voice may need to be ready for these songs in vast arenas for a tour next year, but the songs are in place. Dare I say it, the majority are prepared for stadiums, should he decide to do that for the tour. 

I have heard many pan this album saying it is “boring” and “wannabe Arctic Monkeys”. However, I disagree with what seems like the majority. Apart from the dull moments towards the end, I found it a brilliant, quintessential indie record.

Week 21: Harry Styles- Harry’s House

I expect this to be a short review, but we will see where the mood takes me. I reviewed his first album in 2017 and said it surprised me. He seemed to shun everything One Direction and head into Indie and Rock for his second record. On the same level as Niall Horan? Well, that’s hard to say. Niall is naturally a fan of the Indie scene. His third offering, “Harry’s House”, is a bit of a mixed bag of Indie, funk, and folk to show he is quite capable of being a versatile artist.

I found it quite funny that the opener and teaser were named after a Liam Gallagher documentary about his “As You Were”tour. The single happens to be called ‘As it Was’; honestly, it isn’t great. The song’s premise, according to Harry, was how the pandemic has changed the world and how we are not the same individuals that we were before. 

This can be found in the lyrics, so what it lacks instrumentally makes up for lyrically.

Upon the end of One Direction (For now.), Harry could have continued to make that kind of music, but he opted to draw on his influences across a vast array of genres, and as mentioned earlier, “Harry’s House” focuses on funk, folk, and a little indie.

Let’s talk about ‘Matilda’, an acoustic song where the subject matter is a male. This is based on an experience of Harry’s, who is begging his girlfriend to leave her family life because she is being mistreated. The girlfriend is Matilda. He showcases his poetry prowess on ‘Satellite’ and ‘Cinema’. 

What I like about “Harry’s House”, although it tends to get boring after the halfway mark, is that he doesn’t appear to give a shit about making chart-friendly songs. This album showcases his versatility, and it seems more of a deep conversation with Harry than generic pop for the sake of it. 

As I said, this would be a short(ish)review, and I have nothing more to say save that the best part of the record is before the halfway mark. 

After that, the album loses its power and your interest.

Week Twelve: Niall Horan- Heartbreak Weather

Of course, the lad from An Muileann gCearr (Mullingar) found fame after appearing on the X-Factor in 2010, where the band One Direction was put together (they finished third in that series.) and rapidly rose to be a world-renowned boy band. The band is no more at the moment, but that is a very grey area as the members are embarking on solo careers. Niall has remained grounded by all the success One Direction had and would prefer playing Oasis songs on his acoustic guitar and playing golf when taking a break from recording and touring.

If we are all being honest (Well, the Directioners, anyway.), no one was making any fuss about Niall’s solo career. The focus seemed to be on Harry Styles and initially Zayn Malik as well, but through this lack of expectation, Niall has been free from having a monkey on his back, and it seems to have worked as he is having a better solo career than the rest of his band mates. His debut album “Flicker” in 2017 went to the summit in three countries, including his native Ireland. 

As I listened to the opening track, which happens to be the album track, I was unsure if I could endure the ensuing forty-three minutes. It reminded me of the 1975, and if you know me well, I cannot stand that band. Despite the opener, you do have a range of tracks. “Black and White” sounds like One Direction, “Dear Patience,” and the closer “Still” are like ballads over acoustic guitars. “Arms of a Stranger” feels like a Lewis Capaldi piano ballad, and funnily enough, Lewis will be one of the support acts when the “Heartbreak Weather” tour begins in October (Well, maybe. With what’s going on in the world

at the moment, who knows?).

“Cross Your Mind” is a blend of the old with the new. I say this because the acoustic guitar reminds me of something Johnny Marr would have played in the Smiths. It probably is a sample of a Smiths song or a Johnny Marr song. When I heard it, it did sound very familiar. I was very excited to listen to the track after hearing that Johnny-esque intro, but then it went all modern and sounded like a typical pop song of late. It’s an utter shame, really, because a Johnny Marr-style song is what this record needed. Yes, Niall was trying to appeal to the Directioners as much as possible, but this lad is an indie rock fan. “Nice to Meet Ya” is where Niall chose to go all indie rock, though. Sounds very much like Arctic Monkeys infused with Kasabian. However, I think Niall is going to go down the synth route. 

I would like him to release something more to his taste as it’s risky and shows that he is not afraid to cause shock waves. The loudest ones in One Direction have had moderate solo success, but as they say, the quiet ones are to be watched. Even though Niall was quiet in the band, his actions speak louder than his words. I don’t mind listening to a whole One Direction album, but once a day is enough. The same goes for this record. If I was young enough to be in that generation, I might have got it more and be listening to it more than once a day. That being said, I like Niall and wish him every success. Why? Because he isn’t a dickhead and is more talented than the rest of the band. 7/10
